🏀 The Whistle Feud, A Coach's Suspension & A Finals Berth
The Aces' physicality saw the Indiana Fever lose Game 3 of their 2nd round battle, edging themselves to the brink of elimination. In Game 4, they turned the tables and have now forced Game 5 in Las Vegas.
After the game, 4-time MVP A’ja Wilson talked about how Aliyah Boston labelled her as enjoying a special whistle, but surprisingly shot 13 free throws to her 6 in this game. Boston and the injury-depleted Fever allowed Wilson to score, but rendered her team ineffective.
In the other semifinal series, Alyssa Thomas and her Phoenix Suns were up by a few points when she stole the ball from Napheesa Collier and raced up to score a layup. Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve ran towards the nearest official for not calling a foul on Thomas after her steal left Collier injured.
Reeve later lambasted the officials and called for a change at the head of the league’s referee leadership. For her antics on the court and at the press conference, she was suspended for Game 4. Collier sustained an ankle injury, ruling her out for this battle.
In Game 4, the Lynx battled the Mercury hard in the first three quarters to build a good lead. But in the fourth, the home team again stepped up their defense, while making their shots to win the game, as well as the series.
Kayla McBride was emotional at the post-game presser while talking about the adversity the team has faced in two straight years. On the other hand, DeWanna Bonner talked about her redemption, reaching the WNBA Finals, amidst all the noise after she left the Fever.
🔥 90s Greats Slam Curry & Doncic, and Iggy's Financial Wisdom
The preseason press conferences continued with the Lakers suggesting they would hope LeBron James continues his career with the team and retires with them. His agent, Rich Paul, rubbished reports that the franchise did not offer his client a long-term deal.
Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen claimed that he does not see Luka Doncic make another run to the NBA Finals, especially with the way he plays. He also suggested that the Lakers trade away Austin Reaves as the latter’s skills overlap with the Slovenian.
Another 90s Great, Charles Barkley also stated that all-time great 3-point shooter Stephen Curry would struggle in his era of NBA. He stated that the physical defense and game plans would have limited the Warriors’ star’s impact.
In the 76ers’ press conference, it became evident that star center Joel Embiid might need more time to recover from his knee procedures. His teammate, Paul George, stated that he hopes to leave his dark 2024-25 season behind and return with vengeance.
Warriors’ great, Andre Iguodala, reiterated the need for teenagers to get a grip of their money and focus on developing their craft rather than showing off for fame. He explained how moving from a 3-car garage dream house to a 1-bedroom apartment helped him focus and win 4 NBA titles.
🏈 The Parsons Tie, A Coach Fight & Nabers' ACL Tear
Jerry Jones claimed that not winning a Super Bowl was one of the reasons he traded away Micah Parsons. The star pass rusher returned to AT&T Stadium and was largely quiet for most of the game.
In overtime, as Dak Prescott was about to take off for a game-winning touchdown, his former teammate chased him from behind and brought him down before he could get to the 1st down marker.
After being forced to take a field goal, the Packers had an opportunity to cap off a great night of football with a win, but could not as their field goal left the game on even terms. Parsons was unhappy with the result, even though his former teammates put up a great fight.
The Baltimore Ravens are in a bit of a mess after Lamar Jackson struggled with a hamstring injury, and the Kansas City Chiefs ran them ragged in a one-sided win. This has sparked concerns about the state of the Ravens.
Concerns about Jaxson Dart were quickly thrown out after he ran and threw for a touchdown each to lead his Giants to a deserved win over the unbeaten Chargers. However, the story that stole headlines was Malik Nabers’ season-ending ACL tear.
Injuries continued to be the story of Week 4, after the 49ers struggled with more injuries. However, that had nothing to do with the post-game war of words between Jaguars head coach Liam Coen and 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.
The Colts lost their 1st game after receiver Adonai Mitchell brought back the horrors of Jonathan Taylor’s goal-line fumble. It seems the NFL also fumbled after not being able to sign Taylor Swift to do their Super Bowl halftime show, instead settling for Bad Bunny.
🏌️ Europe Reclaims Cup Amid Crowd Chaos
Team Europe has successfully reclaimed the Ryder Cup, defeating the USA 15-13 in a fiercely competitive match at Bethpage Black. The Europeans set the tone early, starting strong on Day 1 (5.5-2.5) and extending their dominance on Day 2 to seize a massive 11.5-4.5 lead. A pre-singles injury to Viktor Hovland triggered the "Envelope Rule," resulting in a guaranteed half-point for both sides, with Harris English having to sit for the USA. Europe entered Sunday needing just 2.5 points to secure the trophy
Facing a historic 7-point deficit, Team USA launched a furious comeback effort on Sunday. They dominated the singles session, winning six and tying four of the 11 matches played, securing a joint-high 8.5 points for the day. However, Europe's initial lead was simply too large to overcome. Rookie standout Ludvig Åberg delivered the only full singles point for Europe in a crucial win over Patrick Cantlay, which was enough to ensure the overall victory despite the Americans' phenomenal final-day rally.
The victory celebration was clouded by ugly fan behavior directed primarily at Rory McIlroy. The star was subjected to abusive and NSFW comments throughout the weekend. He openly fought back, flipping off fans on Friday and telling the crowd to "shut the f*** up" on Saturday. The hostility peaked when his wife, Erica Stoll, was reportedly hit by a thrown beer cup during play, adding a repulsive element to the event's atmosphere.
In a powerful post-win statement, McIlroy slammed the "unacceptable" conduct of the spectators. He stressed that golf, which prides itself on good etiquette, must hold itself to a higher standard. While partisan cheering is part of the Ryder Cup's fabric, personal insults and physical disrespect towards players and their families crossed a severe line. The European win served as the ultimate on-course answer, but McIlroy's condemnation ensures the unsportsmanlike conduct remains a major talking point.
